One should accept the fact that Games are very popular in the App Store. However, there are a lot of great apps in other areas too. Tons of developers are dishing out quality utility apps every day. You can organize them into a variety of categories such as Audio & Video, Business & Health and Fitness. Let me introduce three extremely handy apps today.

Astral Traveler: If you are interested in meditation, then Astral Traveler is the app, you should look at. This app has two parts – Astral Traveler and Multiverse. Both of them provide an ecstatic combination of visual and audio that could mesmerize any user. Users can also set meditation reminders with it. This app hasn’t been updated since it was launched. Let us hope that developers would come up with an update that could make it an even better one. However, the first version itself seems to be fine. Astral Traveler is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad and it requires iOS 4.0 or later. There is also an exclusive HD version is available for iPads. It has videos, so Astral Traveler is a bit bulky (154 MB) and it costs USD 1.99.

SalesVu: As shoppers prefer plastic money to pay, vendors are looking for a more convenient way to process the payments. SalesVu is one among the very few apps that could do this efficiently. With this free app, vendors can manage all of their locations, accept various forms of payments and track sales and customer data on the go. At present, it processes payments for 2.70 transaction fee, which is lower than the competitors like Square. Vendors from theU.S. can get a card reader for free; for an additional reader, they need to pay USD 99 – we hope that developers would give some thinking over this price. SalesVu is compatible with iPad and it requires iOS 3.2 or later. There is also one iPad version available for this app. This app has already been popular and one would expect it to grow like payment services such as PayPal and Money Bookers.

JamCast: This app lets users record and share videos on the go. Fans can use the regular camera to record the events while performers can use the front camera. The events can be shared in two ways – Private and Public. In Private option, users can share the video by adding up to five emails. The Public feature lets users post it on YouTube. The shared videos would also be saved by the app for the future use. The developers could have added a section for guidance. JamCast is compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch (4th generation), iPad 2 Wi-Fi and iPad 2 Wi-Fi + 3G and it requires iOS 3.0 or later. It costs USD 0.99.

App Store has a huge number of apps and it is a bit hard for the new users to find good ones. I hope that these three apps would help you transform your business and lifestyle. We would love to hear your thoughts about them below.

There are now well over 250,000 apps available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and, surprisingly, many of the best are free.

The following list showcases our pick of the 50 best free iPhone apps, and includes iPhone applications for social networking, travel, news, photography, productivity and more.

If your top free iPhone apps aren’t covered, tell us all about them in the comments.

You can also take a look through the top 10 with our nifty video.

1. Facebook

Once an ugly duckling, but now – as of version 3 – a social-network-aware swan, Facebook is a triumph. The revised grid-based ‘home screens’ provide speedy access to regularly visited sections (news feed, notifications, and so on) and pages, and the experience is such that it in many ways beats the browser version.

2. Gorillacam

Pretty much from nowhere, Gorillacam arrived in December 2009 from the creators of the Gorillapod tripods. It mashes together a slew of features to hugely improve an iPhone’s camera (timer, multi-shot, spirit-level, on-screen grid, ‘press anywhere’ capture), meaning you can bin a half-dozen standalone apps that offer similar things.

3. RunKeeper

The prospect of Nike+ but better and for free might sound unlikely, but that’s what RunKeeper provides. Previously split into ‘pro’ and ‘free’ versions, the developer now generously includes all the features in one free app.

That means you can spend no money, yet use your iPhone’s GPS capabilities to track your jogging and cycling routes, and examine mapping and details of your pace and calories burned. Activities can be shared online, and treadmill runs and other exercise details can be entered manually.

4. Stanza

Kindle’s grabbed many ‘electronic book’ headlines, but an iPhone or iPod touch is a perfectly competent alternative – at least if you have the right app to hand. Stanza enables you to download books from various sources (many of which offer free titles), and you can transfer your own ePub, PDF or eReader titles from the free Stanza Desktop.

5. Dropbox

Plenty of apps exist for transferring content between your computer and your device, but Dropbox is free and easier to use than most of its contemporaries. Dump files you want to sync in a folder on your computer and Dropbox for your device will enable you to access them, download them for offline viewing, and, in many cases, view them.

6. thetrainline

For anyone commuting by train, thetrainline is the free app to beat all others. Journey planning, offline results, timetables and a location-aware ‘next train home’ option are available via a clean, streamlined interface. The app’s not quite as good as National Rail Enquiries, but it is very similar – and five quid cheaper.

7. Skype

It’s imperfect and annoyingly lacks push notifications, but Skype is still an essential download. The interface is pleasingly simple and usable, enabling anyone with a Skype account to make free calls to other Skype users and cheap calls to anywhere in the world. If you’re on Pay and Go, this is particularly handy, but the app also enables iPod touch users to utilise their devices for calls.

8. Movies

Although some aspects of cinema listings app Movies are disappointingly US-centric (notably regarding details on upcoming movies and DVDs), it succeeds where it matters. Select a film and the app figures out where you’re located, lists nearby cinemas, and displays times your chosen film is showing. Efficiency can be further increased by pinning favourite cinemas to the top of the list.

9. TonePad

Virtual pianos and guitars are all very well, but purely digital musical toys are more suited to Apple handhelds. TonePad is the best of them, using a grid-based interface that enables you to turn notes on and off and compose pleasing and harmonious loops; your creations can be edited, saved and uploaded to share with other users.

10. Thomson Reuters News Pro

There are many free news apps, but Reuters News Pro offers a breadth of coverage that makes it a winner. Preferences enable you to tailor the app’s output to the UK, and the toolbar provides swift access to news, pictures, videos and stock markets coverage.

Agh, where did I park my car again? Oh noes! Did I fill up the meter enough? Maaan, where can I even park? I know my forgetful self is always asking those questions over and over again but with Parkbud, I won’t ever have to again.

Parkbud bills itself as a Car Locator and Parking app, which means it’ll help you remember where you parked your car. Just fire up the app and Parkbud will remember where your car is located through GPS with one click. It gives you a snazzy map with instructions on how to get back (and directions to other parking garages if you’re having trouble finding a spot). Parkbud also keeps track of your parking meter too (again, in a snazzy virtual parking meter)—it’ll show you how much time you have left on your meter and fire off an alarm once you get close to running out. There’s even options to take a picture of your parked car to serve as a visual reminder and jot notes down within the app to make sure you never forget where you parked.

It’s the type of app that does things other apps already do (keep track of parking, meters, etc.) but does it in a better package than anyone else. Let’s face it, if Parkbud was hard to use (like other apps are), no one would ever use it. Thankfully, it’s a cinch, I can take down all the relevant tips I need to remember my parking spot while walking away from my car. Plus, the app is kick you in your pants gorgeous. You’ll want to use it and show it off.

Following the launch of the feature-packed Foursquare 3.0, the social-networking giant is testing out NFC-enabled mobile check-ins.

At present, Foursquare enables check-ins via its Android and iOS mobile apps, through which users must select or enter a location using their handsets GPS. With NFC however, users would simply wave their Gingerbread smartphone over a small blue badge, to automatically be tagged in their current location.

Uncovered at Foursquare’s New York HQ, the incoming NFC check-in service is still undergoing testing. However, it’s expected to be integrated with Foursquare’s incoming merchant platform, which will allow vendors to offer their customers sales and discounts through check-ins. These sales will categorized as Flash Specials, Friend Specials, Swarm Specials, Newbie Specials and more.

There’s no word when Foursquare will be launching its all-new check-in service, although it’s likely to début on Google’s NFC-equipped Gingerbread smartphones.

The following apps will allow you to access your computer remotely. If you need a file or forgot to hit send on an email, these apps will solve that. They vary in price and functionality, but all accomplish the same task of teleporting your computer screen directly to your iPhone. All the apps work whether you are on wi-fi or 3G. Some use VNC servers so if you don’t have a Mac you will need to download a VNC server, such as TightVNC.

Screens

By Edovia Inc.

Screens is by the far the best implementation of a remote desktop app. Configuring this app is as simple as naming your computer and downloading a plug-in from http://edovia.com/screens if you want to remote in when you are not on your local network . The app’s price, functionality, and ease of setup make it the best choice. Screens takes remote desk-toping to a new level with a beautiful user interface, quick shortcut keys to spotlight, function keys, astonishingly fast performance on local networks, as well as 3G, tap to click, and a plethora of other features. This is a must have for anyone looking for a remote desktop solution.

Price: $19.99

iTeleport: Jaadu VNC for iPhone / iPad

By iTeleport LLC

This is another great solution for a remote desktop client. However, I would recommend Screens for anyone with a Mac. iTeleport is great for Windows users, even though it does use VNC, so if you are a Windows user you will need to download a VNC Server. There are a bunch of different free options out there. TightVNC is what I use, but any VNC server will work. iTeleport is really easy to set up and utilizes your GMail account for your authentication credentials (if you don’t have a GMail account you will need one, just go to gmail.com to sign up for free). The app’s performance, functionality and interface are top notch, including features such as touchscreen mode (tap to click) and rotation lock. Both this app and Screens handle high resolution screens very well. I tested on a 27” iMac at 2560×1440 with no issues. A solid purchase, but in the end if you have a Mac I would recommend purchasing Screens and using the extra $5 you would save to buy a Tall Caramel Frap from Starbucks!

Price: $24.99

Mocha VNC

By MochaSoft

This is a great application for a network savvy guy/gal on a budget. It comes in a lite version if you want to try it out first. It has all the basic remote desktop tools, but nothing fancy. It is a $4.99 Remote Desktop App and you get what you pay for. If you just want something for your local network this might be the way to go, but if you want to use it on 3G or an outside wi-fi network you will need to know how to access the settings on your router and enable port-forwarding, which is a laborious task if you don’t know what you are doing. Also, this runs off a VNC server, so if you have a Windows box you will need a VNC server installed, such as TightVNC or the like.

Price: $29.99

iTap RDP (Remote Desktop for Windows)

By HLW

I am not a huge fan of the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) because of the fact that only one user can be controlling the computer. So, you can’t help someone fix a problem by logging in remotely because they won’t be able to see what you are doing. With that being said, any Windows users not wanting to install a VNC server on their computer can use this. It has the basic functionalities of a remote desktop client, but I would recommend installing a VNC server and ditching RDP all together. Still, this is a decent solution, and at $12 you aren’t breaking the bank if you hate it.

Price: $11.99

WinAdmin, Remote Desktop

Another decent alternative for RDP. Nothing to really write home about, you can do basic functionality and log in into computers and servers. Nothing else is too ground-breaking about this app other than the fact that it is only $7.99. Again, if you have the ability, I would highly suggest installing a VNC server and using Screens or iTeleport.

Price: $7.99

SpongeBob iSponge, Nickelodeon UK’s first iPhone app, was created in-house at Nickelodeon Digital.

Daniel-James Faulkes, digital producer, said: “One of our aims when developing SpongeBob iSponge was delivering great value for pocket-money.

“With iSponge, you not only get a game that’s as addictive as some of the best-sellers, but for a limited time, you get the fan favourite first- ever episode of SpongeBob SquarePants included in the price.”

Along with the first SpongeBob episode, ‘Help wanted/Reef blower,’ and jelly-fishing game, users will get 12 classic clips of the show with more to download each week. A schedule tells users when SpongeBob episodes are appearing on Nickelodeon.

Nickelodeon UK is looking to explore development models, including shared risk and revenue sharing, and bring more iPhone apps to market.

Roy Edmonds, Nickelodeon’s digital director, said: “This is a great opportunity for Nick UK to test the appetite for iPhone applications with children, and SpongeBob SquarePants, being one of Nickelodeon’s strongest brands and having the broadest appeal, was the ideal starting point.”

Nickelodeon UK recently launched a new website with more interactivity for users and commercial opportunities for advertisers.

We know the basics about the iMovie iPhone app, but apparently news site TidBITShas uncovered a few additional details through some sources within Apple:

iMovie for iPhone will require the iPhone 4, and will not be available for the iPhone 3GS. Handling video and creating real-time transitions needs the power of the iPhone 4’s A4 processor.

Although the iPad runs the A4 processor, the app won’t run on that device. I suspect the app is tailored to the iPhone 4’s higher-density screen, and therefore wouldn’t work within the iPad’s pixel-doubled compatibility mode. (I’d be very surprised if an iMovie for iPad version doesn’t appear at some point, possibly with the release of iOS 4 for the iPad in a few months.)

Projects edited on the iPhone cannot “currently” be transferred to iMovie on the Mac for further editing; projects stay on the phone. (The edited movies can be exported or synced to iTunes, however.)

Video clips can be recorded directly within iMovie for iPhone or come from the Camera Roll (clips previously shot using the phone’s built-in camera). Based on how the Camera Roll works, I suspect it may also be possible to work with clips you’ve shot elsewhere by emailing them from your computer to the iPhone, then saving the attachment to the Camera Roll. The clips would need to be properly formatted as H.264 videos (and without having the software or an iPhone 4 to test, I don’t know which specifications that entails).

iMovie for iPhone is scheduled to ship 24 June 2010 to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 4.

That’s all for now. Guess we’ll be waiting nearly two more weeks to find out everything else. [TidBITS]

Anyone who remembers the eighties will be familiar with the Filofax, a large personal organiser synonymous with the ‘Yuppie culture’. Pin-striped, double-breasted suit types would run around the City with a huge leather wallet loaded with contacts, notes, you name it. They’re still popular today but we also have electronic organisers.

Luckily, increasingly sophisticated mobile apps mean we can organise our lives at the touch of a button via our mobile handsets.

‘Appy days
Softwareload launched its mobile app store this month which includes hundreds of organisational mobile apps for work and personal life. This includes everything from documents, business card tools, right up to weather report apps. If you’ve ever missed a crucial birthday – or worse, an anniversary – then the calendar apps will be of interest to you!

The calendar apps contain a number of tools to help you organise your life, with scheduling appointments, time management and reminders. There are even apps to help you plan your holidays around important global festivals so you can make the most – or avoid – events around the world.

As an avid eBay user, I was drawn towards the pocketWorks myAuction app, which helps you keep up to date with online auctions, so you don’t miss out on the critical bidding period of any products that you had your eye on. And I’ve often kicked myself when I’ve missed out on stuff I’ve bid for because I was out and about when bidding climaxed.

For students, make sure you check out The Dog Ate It Student Planner. This will help you track classes and deadlines, and you can enter your grades as you go along.

I’ll be taking a closer look at these products in future posts, but I’m constantly fascinated by the number of cost-effective applications out there on the market designed to simplify our lives.

Don’t forget, mobiles are easily misplaced, stolen or damaged, so softwareload customers can use the 12-month download guarantee, which enables them to store their purchase securely online should they need to install it on a new mobile device during that period.

I’m sure the Yuppies, whatever they’re doing now, are equally fascinated by organisational apps!
